In an industry where many "so-called" experts continuously attempt to be different for the sake of just being different, the Power Exercises discussed and presented by Coach Philippi & Mike Mahler, on the "Mastering the Power Exercises with Mark Philippi" DVD, is a breath of fresh air.

At the end of the day, you cannot beat the basics. However, Mark intelligently picks the basics apart in such a way, that if you have been performing power-based foundational exercises, such as the Deadlift, Bench Press, Military Press, and Squat for many years, you will soon discover what's old is new again.

I only wish Mark was around, when I started this journey in strength many years ago. I would have saved myself a lot of overuse injuries, and would have put up those seemingly unattainable high numbers I often found myself chasing.

If you are truly a fan of strength and power, a male or female not satisfied with mediocre training programs, or an athlete looking to get stronger, better, and more powerful, without all of the fluff being sold by an industry full of lesser-experienced trainers with savvy marketing skills, then you owe it to yourself to grab this DVD.

I'm sure this is the "one" DVD you will continue to use for many years to come.

Really great work by Mike and Mark! The highest praise I can give is I used the video to troubleshoot and fix my son's front squat and power clean. Even in other areas I felt fairly comfortable (floor press, bench press, and bent row) there were at least two things that helped me in my training in each movement. Great format and videography; very easy to watch in total or in segments to address a trouble area. Get it now!

Now let me tell you how this product came to fruition. At the end of 2009 I was watching a show on spike about UFC fighter Frank Mir. The show was about Frank's training preparation for an upcoming fight. I was shocked when they showed clips of Frank's training as he looked very lean and muscular. I was curious what kind of training program Frank was on and was pleasantly surprised when my friend Mark Philippi was introduced as his trainer. I have done several seminars at Mark's gym PSI in Las Vegas. In fact, three of my DVD's were filmed there including my Collision Course Workshop DVD which features Mark. On the DVD Mark did a module on core strength and strongman training which was a tremendous hit. In fact many people refer to Mark's material as the best work on the entire DVD. I share that view as I think Mark is one of the best strength coaches around.

I have had the pleasure of meeting the best in the business and Mark is in a class by himself. He has the extremely rare combination of experience both as a world class strength athlete (high level powerlifting and strongman training) and a high level Strength Coach. Mark taught at UNLV for many years. He has both a high level academic background as well as a real world athlete background. Very few can make such claims.

After watching the special on Frank Mir, I had an epiphany. I would talk to Mark about training at PSI for three months in order to experience his training material and then work with him to produce a series of DVD's. I wanted to experience what his training philosophy is all about and then help Mark get his work out to a mass audience. While he is one of the best coaches in the business, Mark does not have any information products as he is way too busy to set aide time to create any. Unlike wannabe trainers that have never actually worked with anyone and instead sell ebooks every month for $100.00 a pop, Mark lives in the field. Day in and day out for many years he is at his gym training a variety of athletes and everyday people in the real world. He knows exactly what works and what doesn't and that my friends is priceless knowledge that is worth a hell of a lot more than the meager asking price of this DVD

While Mark does not have time to create information products, I do and have done many projects in the last nine years. I have my own production company and can bank roll an fitness DVD I want. Having made enough of my own material I wanted to branch out and partner with the best in the business to bring more high quality fitness information to you. Every information product I have ever created has been successful and teaming up with Mark would allow him to leverage my experience and knowledge. I could take care of all the ground work and risk and help him develop a great product line. It was a no brainier for me. I get to work with one of the best coaches around and also help a friend develop some new revenue streams in addition to creating an new one for myself as well.

I sent Mark an email and told him about my idea. He said it sounded interesting and asked me to stop by to tell him more. A week later I was in his office conveying my ideas. First, I offered to pay him like any other customer for his training. Then I would finance a DVD project and then we could work out a revenue share that both of us are happy with. Mark being the class act he is officered to train me for free as he was more concerned with developing a passive income. I have known Mark for many years and he knows I am a guy that gets things done and does not waste peoples time. He knew that I would help him put together a great series of information products. No contracts were needed. The trust was there, the word was there, and we shook hands on it and sealed the deal.

I told Mark that my goals were to get a lot stronger and put on some size as well. I wanted the first DVD to focus on the power exercises that men and women have been using for years to build real strength and power. The second project would be on metabolic conditioning for fat loss and endurance. Everything sounded great to Mark and we decided to get started a few weeks later.

I ended up training with Mark for four months and it was an incredible experience to say the least. I did four workouts per week under Mark's tutelage and I think I learned more in those four months than the last several years. To say Mark is a wealth of knowledge is the understatement of the decade. In addition to being a great athlete, Mark is an incredible trainer. I was very impressed with how he handled everyone from NFL players to MMA athletes, to housewives, to obese young men trying to get in shape. One minute he is giving an NFL player a hard time that is slacking off. Then he turns around and tells an MMA athlete exactly what he needs to hear to push forward. Then a second later he sees a young obese kid getting discouraged and offers him a few words of encouragement to get him back on course. Young or old, female or male, professional athlete or every day person, Mark knows how to train them all in with massive effectiveness.

Coaching is a very difficult skill set to master and Mark has it down better than anyone I have seen.. He handles chaos very well and leads from the front. He commands respect and is never pretentious or mean spirited to anyone. He wants to see everyone improve and takes his job very seriously. If you are ever in Vegas you need to make it a priority to get some training sessions with Mark. If you live in Vegas and have kids, get them to PSI. One of the best things you can do for them. I wish I has access to someone like Mark when I first started lifting weights as it would have saved me years of frustration going nowhere.

That is exactly what this DVD is. It is your ticket to avoid years of frustration. You will learn all of the power exercises that provide the most bang for your buck. Want to improve your bench press? It is on this DVD. Tired of your squat going nowhere? Solutions are on this DVD. Detailed information on every exercises that is covered on the DVD!

The Bench Press

While the bench press has come under a lot of heat from functional training purists, real high level strength coaches realize that it has a great deal of value as as an upper body strength developer and part of a full body strength program. Of course this is assuming you know how to do it properly which few people do. A visit to any gym is proof of that.

  • Learn why it is useful for athletes and should be in an overall strength program
  • Common mistakes that most trainees make and how to avoid them
  • The importance of optimal set-up and how to avoid injuries and shoulder stress
  • Proper hand positioning and why you want the bar on the meaty part of your palms
  • How to find the groove and lock it in each time
  • Performance breathing patterns that work big time for the bench press.
  • Performance breathing for repping out vs max reps
  • How to prevent your butt from coming off the bench
  • Why arching your back is important and how it helps you "work in to the bench"
  • How to set the core for optimal bench pressing power and stability
  • Pausing vs touch and go. Pros and cons of both
  • Are variations important or should you just work on bench press performance
  • How to shorten the distance on the bench press for handling more weight than ever.
  • Why the bar should be directly under your eyes on the set up.

The Floor Press

The floor press is a great assistance exercise to the bench press and an alternative to people that find benching stressful to the shoulders.

  • Why you should pause at the bottom of each rep and what to do to power through each rep
  • The benefits for the triceps and improving bench press power
  • When to use the board press over the floor press
  • How to use the floor press to blast through sticking points on the bench press
  • Common mistakes people make on the floor press and how to avoid them.

The Military Press

One of my favorite exercises for upper body strength and power. Nothing says strength like pressing a lot of weight overhead. Learn how to maximize performance by a man that has Military pressed 400lbs out of the rack!

  • Why the military press is one of the best upper body developers
  • The importance of engaging the core for optimal overhead pressing performance
  • Forget about magic carryovers to the bench press and vice versa! You need to do both
  • Cons of behind the neck pressing and why you should press in the front
  • How to accelerate the bar from point A to point B! Forget about slow and controlled
  • Where to lock out and why you want to get the bar over your center of mass
  • How to prevent excessive lean back
  • Why a clean before a press helps with more pressing power
  • The unique breathing mechanics that must come into play for overhead pressing.
  • How to avoid getting dizzy on heavy reps
  • Optimal hand placement for serious pressing power
  • Why you have to tuck the elbows in front of the bar for optimal starting strength
  • Optimal rep range for strength development

Push Press

The push press is more of a leg exercise when executed properly and is great for athletes to develop full body power.

  • Why the military press carries over to the push press more than vice versa
  • How to generate maximum power to get the bar from point A to point B without any sticking points
  • When to avoid all overhead movements

Bent Over Row

Probably the least utilized exercise ever and one of the most important for posture and balanced upper body development. A very functional exercise that should be in your routine. Learn how to do it properly.

  • Why it is a great exercise for the shoulder girdle
  • How the bent over row helps with posture and upper back balance
  • Is some movement acceptable or do you have to lock it in?
  • Why the core needs to be tight and how to set it for strong rowing
  • Which hand placement is best for you and the benefits of various placements
  • Where to pull and why
  • Proper breathing mechanics and why you should work up to multiple reps with one breath
  • Should you keep the weight off the ground or park it on each rep?

Pull-up

It goes without saying that the pull-up is a great measure of bodyweight to strength ratio. You also know that your lean body mass is likely not optimal if you cannot crank out pull-ups. With the popularity of "kipping" few know how to do pull-ups with optimal form. Learn all the performance tips you need on this DVD.

  • Neutral grip vs a wide grip. Should you do both or one or the other?
  • Cannot do even one pull-up? Practice the assistance exercises to work up to reps
  • Why pull-ups are important for the upper back and shoulder capsule
  • Why you should be able to pull as much as you can press
  • The importance of a full hang at the bottom
  • Do lat pulldowns help with pull-up?
  • Should you breathe in before exertion or not?

Front Squat

When it comes to leg training, most men do not do enough and most women do all the wrong leg exercises. The front squat and back squat is where it is at.

  • Why athletes should do both the front and back squat
  • Why the front squat carries over so well to the back squat
  • Arms crossed over the bar or an OL style front squat? Which one is a fit for you?
  • How to set up properly and why you want to have a straight up and down motion as much as possible
  • With reps, it all comes to technique. As long as the technique is there you can go to high reps. Learn how to master technique
  • Parallel or below? learn which one is optimal and why.
  • How to set the core for maximum power

Back Squat

Arguably the most powerful leg exercise. It is only as dangerous as your technique. learn the optimal back squat form and relinquish your intimidation.

  • Optimal dept. Should you go past parallel?
  • How to drive out of the bottom position with maximum power
  • Optimal stance for squats and for carry over to athletics
  • Ideal breathing pattern for maximum speed, stability, and safety
  • Why you want to push back when you come out of the squat.
  • Why you should push your back into the bar.
  • For athletic purposes squats are all about the hips
  • Why hip power is so important and how to use squats to develop it

Good Morning

When executed properly it is one of the best exercises for the posterior chain. Excellent core exercise and incredible for improving both squats and deadlifts. Pierre Ngo in the photo above can do good mornings with 405lbs for reps!

  • It is all about the torso. Why you must set the core and keep a tight torso
  • How to set your torso to protect your back
  • Why it carries over so well to squats and deadlifts
  • Optimal stance and why you should avoid wearing a belt
  • Why the knees should only be slightly bent

Deadlift

Whenever someone showed off about some exotic exercise at PSI, Mark would ask him how much he can deadlift! This brought everything back in perspective as the deadlift is the ultimate in functional training. It does not get more functional then picking up a weight off the floor.

  • Why you want to avoid your legs straightening out too fast
  • How to avoid rounding of the back
  • Why rounding of the shoulders and upper back is okay on maximum lifts
  • Why deadlifts are the ultimate glutes and hamstrings exercise
  • Should you use a hook grip or alternating grip?
  • When to go from an overhand grip to alternating grip
  • Assistance exercises are great but you get better at deadlifting by deadlifting
  • The importance of engaging kegel muscles to initiate deadlift
  • Low reps for pure strength but high reps are okay for endurance if the technique is there.
  • The ultimate in posterior chain training
  • How to drive the bar off the floor with maximum speed and power.
  • Mental tips to power through on the deadlift

Romanian Deadlift

The RDL is one of the best hamstring and posterior chain exercises ever.

  • The differences between the Romanian Deadlift and standard Deadlift
  • Why the core has to be strong and tight on RDL's
  • How RDL's help with the lockout on deadlifts
  • Should you start off the floor or at lockout level?

High Pull

The high pull is an incredible ballistic exercise for developing power and speed. Great progression exercise for the power clean

Power Clean

Power is king in sports and the power clean delivers! The power clean has an element of strength and power and hip extension which simulates a lot of things: jumping and running

  • Why the power clean has a strong element of athleticism when done properly
  • It all starts with optimal body positioning off of the ground.
  • Catching the bar is the hardest part: learn how to master it
  • Can't do power cleans? No problem lean several progression exercises to work up to it
  • How to increase flexibility to catch the weight properly
  • Why high reps are not the way to go
  • When to do ballistic drills in your workout for optimal performance
  • Why you want to sit back into the weight when you set up

Hang Snatch

The hang snatch is a great exercise to develop speed strength rather than strength speed like the power clean. It is much easier to learn than the power clean and is a great way to fire up the nervous system for a great workout.

  • How to use the hang snatch to develop serious speed
  • Three progressions to work up to the Hang Snatch
  • Where to lock the weigh out and how to shift under it for maximum control
  • Optimal breathing for speed on each rep
  • Ideal rep range and sets for speed development

Stick Turns

Mark is a strong believer in having a powerful core. Not only is a powerful core necessary for athletetis it is critical to get the most out of your workout regimen. You will never be as strong as you can be with a weak center. Forget, sit-ups and crunches! At PSI core training is done on your feet and is no joke! I did more core training in 4 months at PSI than all the years before it!

  • Importance of working core standing up
  • What to do to make sure you work it in your routine
  • The right exercises are the ultimate for building a strong base for all power moves
  • Proper execution of stick turns and shoulder turns.

Here is what people are saying about Mark and his team

"Check out www.goarmysports.com. Click on Sports, Football, Roster. The D1 Army Black Knights Football Roster has been updated today and is current.

Former Bishop Gorman Gaels QB and one of YOUR PSI trainees Chase Cresto is listed there as #15 at the position of QB! He has performed well since arriving and showed very well in speed and agility when they tested at the beginning of camp. I think Chase's 40 time was around 4.7. He never really ran a sub 5.0 before. And his arm strength and accuracy has shown well too.

Many many thanks to you and your team, especially Alonzo, for pushing, developing and motivating Chase and having him ready in such a short period of time. He really enjoyed his experience with PSI! 2nd time around too! He said if it wasn't for PSI he wouldn't have achieved what he has achieved so fast athletically at a D1 level.......Great schedule this year and Army hopes to go "Bowling" this year for the first time in awhile."

"Thanks to the time you spent working with me, I am training with greater confidence and efficiency. I am also able to quickly develop a plan to overcome weakness on my lifts. I recently entered my first meet, the NASA masters nationals and totaled 1251 with a PR deadlift of 501. This also marks the first time I have competed in an athletic event since when I wrestled high school."

Tired of fitness products that look for the lowest common denominator? I am and that is why this DVD is our commitment to excellence. Now it is time for you to make a commitment of excellence to yourself

We live in a minimalist society in which people are looking for the lowest common denominator and act accordingly. We see it in movies, television shows, music, customer service, restaurants, and on and on. I do not know about you but I am fed up of it. I hate that anti-climatic feeling that comes when you look forward to something and then end up disappointed that it did not live up to your expectations. This is why I am committed to excellence with my business and life. I never want my customers to feel that terrible anti-climatic feeling with any of my products. I am prepared to apply the deliberate hard work that is necessary to produce excellent products. I do not want to meet the lowest expectations of my customers, I want to exceed the highest expectations of my customers. This is why I find the best instructors for each production. Without top-notch instructors it will be impossible to acquire the best material. We have all seen well produced fitness DVD's with poor material. On the other hand, high quality instruction with low quality production is an insult to the customer.

I have the utmost respect for my customers. Without them I would not have the great living that I have. As a result I have an obligation to people that have supported me over the years to produce not only DVD's with high quality instruction, but exceptional production. Fortunately, I have an in house production team via my brother Roger. To say Roger is committed to excellence would be the understatement of the year. He will burn the midnight oil for as long as it takes to produce the highest quality product possible. Those of you that purchased any of my DVD's already know this. His commitment to improving with each subsequent product shows clearly on Mastering The Power Exercises With Mark Philippi

Get it now!

"Last summer, I attended your performance institute to prepare for the Utah High School football season. I attend Juan Diego Catholic High School in Draper Utah. My team is the 2008 state 3-A state CHampions, and part of my goal and the teams goal was to repeat as state champs. We did just that, 2009 Utah State Champions. I would like to thank PSI and its staff for helping me prepare for the 2009 football season. Attending PSI helped me become the best that I could with the personalized training that was offered. I went on to be 1st team all region, Utah 3-A All State Player.

Here is my highlight video of my perfomances of the 2009 football season.
