While I feel that experiencing adversity is crucial for growth, I do not think that it is something that one should purposely go after. For example, don't go into debt just to learn how to get out of it and don't break your leg just to appreciate having healthy legs. However, do not be afraid to go after what you want due to the inevitable adversity that will follow. Yes, you are going to have to overcome some hard times to achieve anything worthwhile. The bright side is that every time you overcome a difficult obstacle, you have another story that you can boast about at the local bar or coffee shop. Seriously though, when adversity comes your way, embrace it and look right at it and say to it that you will not break me. I am going to get what I am going after and that is that. If your resolve is genuine and it is in your destiny the universe will have away of giving you what you deserve. More important than overcoming adversity is the person that you become as a result of overcoming adversity.
On a side note, one of the benefits of hard training is that it teaches you how to push through pain. Don't leave that conditioning in the gym; apply to other areas in life to achieve your goals.

Many people have a tendency to gravitate towards their comfort zones and working out is no exception. How many people do you know who love doing set after set of bench presses, but avoid the squat rack like a plague (except of course to do barbell curls)? Place the exercises that you love on maintenance mode for a month and place the exercises that you know you need to do at the top of you list and get to it!
